Handmade Ceramics

portret van Koen van Loon door Silvia Arenas
Hey! My name is Koen and I make ceramics, which are objects made of clay and fired in an oven (kiln).

The Maker's Hands

My studio is based in Rotterdam, which is also where I was born and raised.

If you are ever in the neighbourhood and feel like dropping by, send me a message! I would love to show you around.

Why did I start with ceramics?

When studying at the Willem de Kooning Academy I stumbled upon the ceramics workshop and gave it a try.
This is where I learned a variety of possibilities, and there are many! Getting to know the material, finding that clay has a will of its own, attracted me. Especially working with plaster moulds, which allows me to create very clean designs. Because the clay has its own will, you can never fully control the end result. A series of cups that are initially the same, will come out of the kiln as unique individual cups, altered by a combination of heat and time.

What do I hope to achieve with my work? What is my vision?

With the playful element in my work, I hope to encourage people to look at their surroundings differently. With the choices in color and material, I aim to surprise people by drawing their attention to the details. Ultimately, my goal is to increase the appreciation for everyday objects. When you drink from a cup or eat from a plate, I want you to be able to enjoy that moment more because of the objects you use.
